Grant had a significant role in the Civil War, he won many battles including triumphs at Fort Henry and Fort Donelson. He was also president Lincolns right-hand-man. Grant lost a battle and Lincoln kept him, his reason was "he could fight" this is what kept Grant one of the more liked generals by Lincoln. It was also his way of always following orders and taking risks. Grant made a big difference on the battlefield becoming the general-in-chief after a couple more victories under his belt. He fought for the Union in the entire war and was a close associate to Lincoln. His most significant contribution to the war was being the general of the Union army, winning many battles, following orders and eventually ended up making Lee surrender over a long time of war, even though half his men were depleted over the stretch of the war.
